I, Marika Aakala, was born in southern Finland. I work in the animation industry as a puppet maker and I am currently living in Bristol, England.  I have made puppets and props professionally since 2014.

I have two BA degrees; I studied culture and arts at HAMK UAS and Occupational therapy at Helsinki Metropolia UAS. From a stable career in the healthcare sector, I jumped onto the world of animation and completed a Master's degree  with distinction in Animation Production from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB). During my MA studies I explored the use of facial expression techniques in stop motion animation both conceptually and practically.

Researching my craft and learning more about stop motion animation is a passion of mine. I am a part time postgraduate research degree student at AUB concentrating on the digitisation of handmade processes in stop motion animation. My other interests include  sculpture, puppet theatre, illustration, knitting, animism, ancestral skills, and folk remedies. Displayed on this site are some examples of my professional work  and personal projects.
